"What's in a Name?"
John’s gospel has a specific focus: addressing the fundamental question of who Jesus is. Unlike the other three gospels, John places greater emphasis not just on the historical figure, Jesus of Nazareth, but on the exalted Christ. This distinction aligns with Peter’s words in his Pentecost sermon, affirming that God has elevated the crucified Jesus to the positions of both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36). In John’s gospel, Jesus articulates seven declarations, each beginning with the phrase “I am.” Collectively, these statements present a nuanced perspective of Jesus, illustrating how he influences various aspects of our daily lives, including our struggles, fears, questions, hopes, and dreams. |
